How much does it cost to cancel Visa for Dubai city?

I am an American student with a residency visa through my university here. When I went to my school to cancel the visa today, they said the UAE charges a nominal fee to cancel them.

I had never heard this before, and neither had my friends. Has anyone else been charged to cancel a visa, or is my school just trying to squeeze every last penny from me?
