Origin & Development

Mohidin Binhendi who is the DCA’s Director General pioneered the concept of the DDF. He had observed that the shopping provide at the Dubai Airport was insufficient and scattered. Hence, he thought of a solution.

There was a catering arrangement, which on moving out provided the space for the DDF. It began in the year 1983 and had 24 outlets. You will e surprised to know that the annual revenue for the first year amounted to US$20 million.

Besides providing trade options, it organizes various sports events like the Dubai Duty Free Snooker Championships, Dubai Tennis Open, World Series Tournament, etc. It constructed a tennis stadium too and closely related to horse racing. The primary complex was renovated and reopened in 1989.

Duty Free - Accolades

The DDF has proved to be one the finest duty free shopping options in the world. In little above two decades it has proved itself to be worthy of almost 70 awards and accolades. It is the 12th highest revenue-earning airport duty free in the world.

It has also received the award of the “Airport Retailer of the Year” at the Tax Free World Exhibition, Business Traveller Germany’s “World’s Best Airport Duty Free Shopping Award” six times consecutively, the “Best Duty Free in the Middle East” awarded by Travel Intelligence, etc. There are many more awards that are coming its way due to its ever-improving facilities.

There are two outlets dedicated to watches and one to sunglasses. Besides excellent shopping options, the Dubai Duty Free is full of surprises. There are lucky draws and you can actually drive away with a motorbike or a luxury car.
