21yr old male NEEDS HELP WITH VISA OPTIONS!!!

I am a 21 year old student in the UK. I have lived in Dubai since i was 13 and recently left in September 2009 to begin studying at university. As part of my course, I have to complete a one year paid work placement. I am fortunate enough to know some people in Dubai who can offer me a placement for a year, but they cannot sponsor me (the reasons for which are irrelevant). I would like to know if there is anyway for me to attain a residence visa without being sponsored by a company? basically, what are my options? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
